Got Sins to Confess? There's an App for That.

Have you sinned today? Don’t worry about finding time to swing by your local church, just hit up the iTunes store. Yes, there is indeed an app for that. Catholics with a guilty conscience can now whip out their iPhones and confess their mistakes to Confession: A Roman Catholic App.

You've got to be kidding, right? I wish I was!

This app comes soon after Pope Benedict XVI’s statement that priests should embrace digital communication.

The Catholic Church in the U.S. sanctioned the app, and promises it will deliver believers with a “personalized examination of conscience for each user.” But if total and complete absolution is your desired outcome, you might be dissapointed. You still need a priest to grant you that (for now).

And if you’re worried about your sending your sins into the cloud, don’t fret. The app comes with password-protected profiles.

What are your thoughts? Going to be confessing to your iDevice any time soon?

I don't know how I feel about this either. On the one hand, it's "cutesy" and users might think this is sufficient. But this can be said of any program, whether software or church-ordained. On the other hand, if the user treats this as a tool to be used to strengthen their relationship with God, then it's fine.

Because, really, we all need to confess. While I disagree with our Catholic brothers and sisters that the priest has to be the one to grant us absolution, I think they're dead on concerning our need for regular confession. There is power in the sharing of our sins with someone, and a broken stronghold.

We need more than just confession, though. We need the forgiveness, and sometimes we need the penance, too. Only God can truly forgive us, but sometimes God needs flesh to administer it.

Does this really count? Wonder if they'll come out with an Ash Wednesday app that somehow marks the cross on your forehead.

I don't know. The more I think about it, the more confused I get. I guess this is just another reason I'm thankful that I have Jesus as my great High Priest and I don't have to bank on a priest or a confession app to get me by.
